Rome is the capital of Italy and also serves as the capital of the Lazio region. It's located in the central part of the Italian peninsula, on the banks of the Tiber. It is the center of the Metropolitan City of Rome, which has a population of 4.3 million residents. The Vatican City is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city: for this reason Rome has been often defined as capital of two states. As the first seat of the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church, it has had a tremendous impact on social customs throughout the world. Several European languages are based on Its Latin language. Moreover, many political and legal systems follow the old Roman model.
